Volume profile & TPO

Volume profile

A horizontal histogram showing total traded volume at each price level across a session (or any custom window). Reveals where the market spent the most time accepting price.

What it is

A volume profile is a horizontal histogram showing total traded volume at each price level across a defined window — typically a single session, but it can span any time range you choose: a multi-day swing, the overnight session, the first hour of trade, a custom event window. Where a standard chart's vertical axis is price and its horizontal axis is time, a volume profile rotates that view: price stays on the vertical axis, and volume is bucketed and drawn as horizontal bars stretching to the left or right.

The result is a picture of where the market spent its volume rather than when. Levels with thick bars are where price traded heavily — these are the prices the market collectively agreed were fair during the window. Levels with thin bars are prices the market rejected quickly: little volume means few participants were willing to transact there.

The profile is built from per-tick volume-at-price data. Each trade contributes its size to the bucket containing its price. Bucket size (the price resolution of the profile) is typically the instrument's tick size but can be coarsened for visual clarity.

Why it matters

Volume profile is one of the most-used non-price visualization tools in futures trading. It surfaces three pieces of information that a candlestick chart hides:

  • The Point of Control (POC) — the single price with the most traded volume in the window, often acted on as a magnet or fade reference for future sessions.
  • The Value Area — the central price range containing roughly 70% of traded volume (its bounds are VAH and VAL), used as session-scoped support and resistance.
  • Low Volume Nodes (LVNs) — gaps in the profile where price traded thin, often acting as fast-travel zones when revisited.

These features turn the profile into a structural map of where price is likely to react in subsequent sessions, independent of where it currently is.

How it appears on Sierra Chart

Sierra Chart provides native volume profile rendering as a study, with extensive configuration for window definition (per-session, rolling, custom dates), bucket size, value area percentage, and visual style. Profiles can be drawn directly on the main chart as a price-by-volume overlay, or in a dedicated subgraph region.

The platform also exposes the underlying per-price-level volume data — the VAP (Volume at Price) arrays — to ACSIL via c_VAPContainer, so custom studies can build their own profile-derived signals without re-aggregating tick data.

Common patterns / pitfalls

  • Window selection drives meaning — a daily profile and a weekly profile of the same instrument tell different stories. Be explicit about what window you're analyzing.
  • Bucket size matters — too fine and the profile looks like noise; too coarse and you lose the POC's location.
  • Initial Balance — the first hour's profile (or the first N minutes) is often treated separately, since it carries information about opening intent.
  • Don't confuse with TPO — volume profile aggregates volume; TPO (market profile) aggregates time. They look similar but answer different questions.
  • Naked POCs — POCs from prior sessions that have not been revisited tend to act as magnet levels. Tracking them is a common practice.

Related SCS studies

SCS does not currently ship a dedicated volume profile add-on — Sierra Chart's built-in study covers the core use cases well. The order-flow studies SCS does sell (CVD Filled Area, Single Print and Gap, Delta Candle Color, Zero Print Zones) operate on the same VAP infrastructure that drives volume profile, and are typically used alongside it.
